Screens, Kids, and Development: A Few Things We Often Miss During this Christmas break, while travelling, I noticed many very young toddlers and children spending time on screens. This prompted me to write a short post, as screen time is an area of specific research interest for me. Much of the information circulating is still quite generic, so I wanted to share some evidence-based nuances that may be helpful. Here are some important points to consider: 1.⁠ ⁠Screen time is not a single exposure - Effects depend on the child’s age, type of device, content, timing, and context of use. 2.⁠ ⁠Age at exposure is critical - Screen exposure during infancy (e.g., 6–12 months) affects development differently than exposure at 2–3 years or later. Early exposure coincides with sensitive periods for language, attention, and sensory integration.
